The SGA Involvement Fair was this week. You had the opportunity to explore several options for involvement on campus and in the community. What are you interested in doing and how will this fit into your schedule?

There are many opportunities in the city of Spartanburg as well as around Converse College. I want to be involved in both, but knew not to overload myself due to time constraints, which I am sure everybody is getting a taste of. I want to start working at Starbucks again. I would like to transfer to the one in Spartanburg. I looked at my schedule and am waiting until next semester to transfer. Because I am not currently working, I want to be involved with something else. I decided to take a position in the music school as the Freshman Representative to the Student Advisory Committee. This job is split between two freshman music students. We meet with the Dean of the music school monthly to discuss concerns, questions, or recommendations, dealing with the music school. This gives me a chance to stay involved without to much time constraint! It’s a monthly meeting, and it is something I am completely interested in! I would love to start doing voluntary work around the town of Spartanburg, but will hold off until I get used to my first commitment! After I feel comfortable with the first job, I will slowly add things to my list options and see what works best with my schedule.

What are the differences between high school and college? How will you manage your time and develop strategies without nagging and reminders from others.

There are many differences between high school and college. I feel the biggest and most obvious difference is how independent and self-reliant we must be. No longer can we depend on our parents or friends to remind us about meetings, deadlines, events, etc. It is essential that we have some sort of motivation to be here, at college. Therefore, we can wake up for those 8:30 AM classes. Learning how to manage time and schedule meetings making sure none interfere with each other is one of the hardest things about college. I feel it takes awhile to get really situated with the classes. Getting used to the Professors and buildings, the homework load for each class, and the time spent for individual activities. I organize my classes into different folders and binders, this makes it easier for me to know what I need each day. I write assignments down in my planner, and when I have a free minute, I write down my schedule for the rest of the day, planning the most effective way to get my work done. Doing this helps me organize my thoughts and reassures me that I will complete all my work. Although this works effectively, it is sometimes hard to know how much time you will need on certain assignments to REALLY know the material. When I notice something I don’t understand right away, I tell myself to look at it daily. I feel I will continually find myself learning new tricks to stay organized.
